Pink - CD Cover

Pink
Mise En Scene
The key light is coming from the front to highlight and emphasize her facial expressions. Her eye contact with the audience suggests she is engaged and appears warm and approachable. This is a marketing technique used to draw in the audience as they are more likely to buy a cd cover they feel connected or related to in some way. Her appearance is both girly and punk-like. The colours used are quite bold to again draw the audience's attention. Pink connotes femininity and beauty, however black connotes death and pain. Both colours together contradict each other, whereby the message being portrayed by the artist, Pink is a mixture of semiotics. Her costume is quite revealing, portraying a sexual or flirtacious side of her to draw attention from her male audiences, this also could connote that she is open to the public, she is free for comment or feedback from her target audience. The tattoo on her arm tells me that she knows pain and she conveys herself to be hard-looking and fearless.
She is lying on the sofa, in a relaxed position. Her body language portrays that she cannot be bothered and isn't paying much attention or interest. It also expresses that she is laid back in life and takes things as it passes by.
Copy (Text)
The copy is also in pink to enhance a softer side of her appearance. The copy is written in graffiti to stereotype her as an artist as being quite rough and one of the typical trouble-makers. Evidence of this could be reinforced with lyrics from some of her songs. For example, So What and Funhouse.

Avril Lavinge - Sk8er Boi
Skater Boi music video
Setting
The main setting for this video was shot in the busy streets surrounding by high rised buildings. This is to create an atmosphere of a heavily populated area which have gathered round Avril to enhance her popularity with the public. In the first part of the music clip, there are many jump cuts to different settings such as bedrooms, buses and coffee shops whereby Avril's street performance is being promoted to the public. This is shown to enable the audience to understand the storyline of how she became well known on the streets.
Costume
Her costume is punk-like. She is wearing 3/4 length trousers with a top and tie, this connotes she is an individual when it comes to style however also shows some sophistication with the tie. She also has black leather gloves with silver spikes to represent her rebellious side and hard-looking attitude. The colours she wears are bold such as red, green and black which is used to make a statement that she knows who she is and has adopted this particular image which connotes that she gets straight to the point about what she wants and who she will be.
Camera Shot/Movement
One of the first establishing shots is a low angle shot looking up the side of a building which displays a star symbol with an address and time. This starts the storyline of the upcoming camera shots. It creates an enigma for the audience as to what this sign represents. Another screen shot of a male teenager sitting at his computer and then it straight cuts to the computer screen to see what he is looking at, again it has the same advertisement of the star, address and time writen in an email. From this shot we gather information on what age range the target audience is for this type of artist, young teens. Again another extreme close up is used on a mobile phone, displaying the same information, after a while the star symbol starts to become iconic and represents the performance by Avril Lavinge.
Two medium shots are cross cutting between one another prepresenting the boy and the girl in the story of her song. This is to help the audience understand her lyrics and can grasp the idea of how she is trying to portray both characters. The boy wears a helmet and is riding a bike, it connotes he is middle class. He also wears a lip ring to categorize him in his own social group using her lyrics and his costume to stereotype. Same goes for the girl, she wears high-neck tops to suggest sophistication and she is driving a convertable which connotes her to be upper class and weathly. Both characters are stereotyped in this way to show audiences the contrast from his and her lifestyle which enables them to follow the storyline of her song more clearly.
An extreme close up of the clock to show that it is nearly twelve mid-day (noon) is taken, it was imperative to use because that is what has been promoted in previous camera shots.

Lilly Allen - Smile
Lily Allen
This music video does not conform to any of the conventional narrative, propp or todorov theories. However is does follow half of the todorov theory whereby it the new equilibrium is reinstated when Lily gets her own back on her ex boyfriend.
Lily's target audience is also broad as at any age over 14+ can easily relate to a situation such as this, however the main focus will be on teens and young adults. The reason why i think this is because of the way she dresses will appeal to the younger generations and also because of the story line she displays comes accross as quite child-like and irresponsible which maturer generations would not respond to or react in this way.
Camera shots/movement
The establishing shot of this music video is a slow zoom in to a medium shot of Lily sitting on her bed eating chocolate. The zoom in allows for the audience to first of all set the scene and then focus in on her facial expression. Her facial expression is sad and the fact that she is eating chocolate reinforces this as people associate junk eating when upset or depressed. A medium shot of lily being cuddled by a guy sets the scene for the audience also, it is clear from the very first two shots that they were boyfriend and girlfriend and now they have broken up. Another medium shot at a low angle looking up at lily holding her phone, again the audience can relate to as some point everyone has gone through that and it enables the audience to capture the emotions she is feeling via the facial expression she is sending out. Many zoom in's are taken from a long shot closing into a medium shot to allow the audience plenty of time to establish the first setting, which is in her bedroom.
In the enxt scene she is standing on a street corner on her phone and a man walks into the frame and stops to talk, this creates an enigma for the audience. Who is this man? What relation is he to Lily? A close up of passing money to this guy intensifies this enigma even further for the audience. What is this money for? It then returns to a long shot and they both walk out the frame in different directions. The fact that they both walked off swiftly after exchanging money suggest that this could possibly be a dodgy deal as they didn't linger about. Could this mean they do not want to be seen together? If so, for what reason? The first minute of the video is a build up of enigma for the viewers as they are unsure of what is about to occur.
The next important camera shot is an open shoulder shot of this anonymous man talking to a gang of youths. At this point the audience will start to build an image and connecting the dots of Lily's plan. Reasons for this statement is the fact she has just given cash to an anonymous man which already is conveyed as dodgy and now he converses with a group of youths which are stereotypically associated as and involved with trouble-some and mischievious activities.
A tracking shot of Lily's ex boyfriend walking and talking on the phone fits in the lyric, 'calling me up on my phone.' This connected so that the audience can follow the story line more clearly. Also now that there is an establishing medium shot of him the audience are now clear on who she is singing about. The statement that Lily had a a mishievious plan is reinforced when a 2 shot of her ex boyfriend and one of the youths come into frame and then a fight breaks out. It straight cuts to Lily Allen, this is done to show her surroundings that she is only round the corner from where her ex is and also so that the audience can get a good climpse of her faical expression. She is smiling which supports the fact that she is behind this attack. A long shot is taken in a back street corner whereby you can see the 'chavs' beating this ex boyfriend up without seeing explicit detail so that her video is suitable for viewing for all ages however it does not promote a good message to any age audience.
A long shot is used to allow audiences to see their surroundings and where they are heading to. Another medium shot of Lily sitting down in a cafeteria what added in to establish where they are. Then it straight cuts to a 2 shot of both Lily and her ex taking off their coates to get comfortable at the table, this suggests they are going to converse about the events which had just occured.
Many medium shots are taken of Lily to highlight her facial expressions which are conveyed to be sad, while she is sitting with her ex, however the audience know that this is just an act for her ex.
Also many over shoulder shots are taken of her ex as he explains his unfortunate encounter and therefore we are able to gather his emoitions via his facial expressions.
A zoom in is used of another youth kicking down the door in the middle of an alleyway, again this creates an enigma. What he is planning next? Where does this door lead to?
A high angle shot of two youths it used to allow the audience to see the level of distruction they cause within the flat. Also hand held camera movement is used to create a more realistic and chaotic atmosphere for the audience, furthermore it can be approached differently such as 'happy slapping' whereby youths stereotypically film acts of violence or distruction.
A close up of them scratching vinyl records is focused on, it is the the prime subject of the frame, what is that for and why is it important to frame?
A side shot of Lily sitting alone at the table looking over her shoulder creates suspicions amoungst the audience as her facial expression conveys as concerned and devious. A close up of a box of laxatives is focused upon to show its importance in the story line.
As Lily's ex returns home, a close up of his facial expressions to show his shock when finding the state of his apartment to enable the audience to relate and understand his emotions. A medium shot shows him kissing his case of vinyl discs to suggest how important they are to him. This is clear later on in the video where the audience can see his occupation is a dj, a close up of a dj deck is shown and the scratches are visable to him. A pan shot soon later is used which shows him standing out of the dj box, he had been pushed aside as his vinyl discs were unusable, this as a bigger picture has also threatened his career. At this point some audiences may feel sympathy for his character, more than likely this reaction will come from male audiences as they are able to personally relate. Female audiences however may feel resentment or unsympathetic towards his situation as they also can relate coming from their point of view. Without question, males and females do generally tend to always place themselves in the shoes of the same gender, as they feel is easier to relate with as it is natural to understand the feelings of the same sex.
A high angle shot of the toilet with him clothes stuffed inside them shows it from his point of view, this will create a mood amoungst viewers, a sense of panic and sympathy for him as a character.
Lily's lyrics are perfect fitting for her story line as she 'smiles' by getting her own back on him, this is evident in many shots such as a tracking shot which is taken of Lily walking down the street in confidence and with a happy and satisfied expression.
Costume
In the beginning scene, Lily is wearing a dress, which conveys her to be feminine and girly. She is wearing big gold heart-shaped earings which is quite ironic as relationship and and heart break is what she sings about within her lyrics. Lily has a reputation to look quite 'chavy' in some of her music videos, this statement is reinforced in her choice of costume in this video. More evidence of this is whe she is wears a dark blue coat, again wearing a dress conveying to be lady-like however it contrasts with the trainers she wears, this connotes she is both girly and a tom boy. Also the colours of her outfit are balck and pink, two contrasting colours which again could connote both a good and evil side to Lily. It alos could represent her mood, she wears a dark coloured coat to connote her anger she feels towards her ex and her dress is pink which conveys her happiness she gained from her revenge. Her make-up is over done which could show that she tries to hard and her fingers are covered in fake gold sovereign rings. It is clear Lily was styled to look this way so that she has a hard-looking exterior. Maybe this was to fit into the idea of her story line as media today has built a wall around the ideology of chavs today in society and built up a threatening reputation therefore is adds to the threatening appearance she is trying to portray.
The youths are stereotypically dressed in tracksuit bottoms and hoodies, the girl youth has her hair scrapped back into a pony tail which shows that she does not care about her appearance much. Again she is wearing big hooped earings which is also associated as 'chav' looking.
Lily's ex boyfriend is wearing jeans and a smart black coat which conveys him as intellectual and more fashionable.
Lighting
Majority of Lily's video is shot in natural light, the light appears blue therefore it tells me it is set in the morning time. It also tells me that the weather is bad which could add to the dull and depressing mood she is displaying. Also the fact that the lighting is natural, this gives off a sense of realism.

Miley Cirus CD Cover

Miley Cirus
Mise En Scene
Miley cirus is centre framed. She wants to pronounce herself to her audience, she portrays herself as confident and extrovert her body language and positioning. Her leg is placed ontop of one of the cases, this comes accross as quite flirtacious and vervacious.
Her clothing is stylish and up to date with teenagers of our generation. Teens can relate to this artist being our age, we feel we have more in common then we do with a pop/rock artist who is 25 and over. This also may be due to fact she played the role of a teenager, dealing with stereotypical and similar lifetsyle situations teens have, in one the most successful teen comedy's in the USA, Hannah Montana. She is wearing both black and white which connotes she has both an angel and devil side to her personality. It also allows her silhouette to stand out from the background of this cd cover. She is surrounded by red cases, this portrays she is on the move, travelling from place to place. The cover entitiles 'BREAKOUT' which suggests that she is hitting the road and ready to explore new horizons to enhance her career further. Another reason which concludes my evidence of this is the background of a long road with a bright light in the distance which connotes that she is on the way to stardom and a bright future. She holds a microphone to her mouth to show that she loves singing and that it is apart of her, she carries the microphone with her on her journey to emphasize the fact that this is what she intends to continue to do in her future plans.
Copy (Text)
The copy is in a standard font. The emphasis on her first name stands out to grab the audiences attention. She is most commonly known as Hannah Montana or Miley therefore placing her forname in bold letters will draw attention to her as an artist by appealing to a wider audience via using a marketing strategy, through the use of her most popular identity.
Kelly Clarkson - My Life Would Suck Without You
Kelly Clarkson
The target audience for this is mainly teenagers or young adults are they can relate more to her situation being around the same age. She also attracts that age group via the way she dresses and the man she uses in her video is good-looking therefore this will also attract her female audiences.
The narrative theory applies to this music video as their is a clear structure of beginning, middle and end.
Camera shots/Movement
The first camera shot is of Kelly Clarkson's feet, it reveals little about the artist to begin with to create an enigma for the audience. Also the fact she is wearing no shoes suggests that she is free and conveying to be open to the audience. It then straight cuts to a medium shot of Kelly's face to portray a soft facial expression, from this the audience can already presume what emotion she is feeling and that this song will convey warm lyrics within her song.
There is a long shot of a boy and a girl playing in a playground together creating a happy and playful atmosphere, at first this does not make sense to the audience as there is no relation between the children and Kelly. The next shot is of the little girl on the swing and then it straight cuts to Kelly on the swing, from this the audience can now gather that the little girl represents Kelly as a child. Now we realize that the two children represent her growing up with a boy and reminising over memories. There is a fast zoom in on the bracelet/necklace which the young girl is wearing with a "K" on it so that the audience can follow the story line more clearly. A medium shot of the boy and girl hugging fit in with the lyrics so that the audience can understand the meaning behind them. 'Guess this means your sorry.'
An extreme close up of the keys to Kelly's apartment conveying that it is her property and she holds them up towards the man which could portray she is offering for him to stay with her, sending the bigger message that she wants to share their lives together.
A long shot is shown of them running around the dinning room table being playful just like they did when they were young, it suggests that there relationship is still the same and they haven't grown up from being children in the way that they behave around each other. Some of the camera shots coming up reinforce this statement. For example, an extreme close up of Kelly's holding the keys up to the camera teasing the audience, will she give them to him? It straight cuts to a close up of her dropping them into the toilet conveying a message to both him and the audience that he cannot come back unless he is desperate to.
There are multiple shots of the camera zooming in on Kelly's face while she is singing with the band on stage, many close ups were taken of her face to highlight how much she means the words she sings and so that she engages her eyes to connect with the audience. Some of her facial expressions are quite flirty, i think this is to appeal to her male audiences. In the scenes where she is singing with a band in the background, straight cuts to the guitarists and drummers are used to enhance how much she means the lyrics in her song and it invites the audience into and energetic and up beat atmosphere.
Mid-way through the song a 2 shot is used on the kelly and this man as children sitting apart on either side of the frame and then jump cuts to them in the same position as adults, again this portrays how their relationship is still the same and how they continue to argue and make up with one another. Evidence to support this statement is shown when Kelly and the man are sitting peacefully on the sofa together, presumably watching television as he then snatches the remote from her and they start to fight, however you can see that both their facial expressions are happy which proposes that they enjoy teasing and annoying each other. It also suggests that this is a disfunctional relationship and the majority of the audience will not be able to relate to this behaviour.
In the next scene they are riding in car together, a side on medium shot is taken of them both with Kelly trying to take a photo of him. This links in with the lyrics at that moment, 'Cause we belong together now.' What is the reason behind the photo? Does it symbolize that she wants a photo to say that he belongs to her. This arguement is established when an extreme close up is taken of the mobile showing her closing her mobile after taken the photograph which implies that she has no intentions of deleting it.
One of the finishing shots is a long shot of them both in the car nearly crashing into another vehicle therefore they end up spinning off onto a side road, this could be related to the way that their relationship works in the sense that they almost crash and fall out but then they save themselves from both the crash and splitting up. The final shot is a 2 shot of them kissing in the car, this also associates with the final lyric line, 'My life would suck without you.' They both had a near death experience so therefore the kiss could represent how much he means to her and feels it is necessary and suitable to show so that the audience can understand how she feels through her lyrics and through the use of her camera shots.
Costume
In the opening scene she is wearing an black evening dress portraying that she is feminine and girly. This challenges the stereotype of pop/rock artists to look punk-like. As a child she is wearing a skirt which again shows that she was a girly girl and not a tom boy. The little girl is wearing long pink and white stripped socks, these extravagant colours are conventional to the pop/rock genre.
The following scene where they chase each other around the apartment she is wearing a light coloured top which could connote happy emotions. The man is wearing a black top to convey that he is the 'villain' in the story line and that he is in the wrong, also that he is feeling bad for leaving all the time. When they fight Kelly's is wearing a blue top, the many changes of outfits promote the fact that these are different occasions and suggest that they fight a lot. At the point when they are sitting on the sofa together but they are happy, she is wearing a man's shirt to imply that they are close in the sense that she wears his clothing like some couples do before bed. The 2 shot whereby they are sitting apart as adults they both are wearing black clothing to represent a sad mood and atmosphere.
When she is singing with the band on stage she is wearing stylish clothing with full face make-up like she is performing for her fans, black leathered skinny jeans and a grey and green jacket and top. These are also conventional colours for the pop/rock genre. She also wears a necklace or chain with keys dangling from the end of it, this could connote she keeps them with her in case he disappears again.
In the finishing scene when they are in the car together, she is wearing a checkered shirt which is black and grey and the man wears a black leather jacket again reinforces the conventional punk or rock look. They both are wearing shades which connotes they both have something to hide as they are unable to see into each others eyes.
Lighting
The establishing scene the key light is coming from in front of her face to highlight her soft facial expression. Fill lights will have been added from above to create soft looking shadows also. In the playground, natural light is the key light, however the light is yellow which shows that the time is set near sundown. in the apartment, all the lights are on which is their key light, however when she sings at the window, the key light again is coming from in front of her to show her facial expressions. When she is singing on stage you can see that light is coming from behind her to silhouette her figure, and a main light is shinning on her face like a proper video set up. Back to the apartment, fill lights are placed in front of their faces again to allow the audience to see what expressions they hold on their faces. The final setting, the key light is natural lighting again, it is yellow therefore is also is set around sundown.
Avril Lavinge CD Cover

I have choosen Avril Lavinge as an example CD cover, this is because her music has varied alot between both the rock and pop genres.
Mise En Scene
Her costume is one of the iconic respresentations of her as an artist. It conveys her personality and her style through her choice of wardrobe. The dark colours connote fear, darkness and possibly depression. It also conveys her to have a hard exterior with attitude. Furthermore it reinforces the stereotype about teenagers and that she is portraying herself to be a rebellious character. The lighting used on this CD cover is dark, the colours black, grey and white and the dominant colours used and this contrasts with her facial expressions portraying emotions such as anger, discomfort and sadness. Her trainers and combat trousers suggests she is a tomboy type of girl, stands for no nonsense and conveys to have a strong persona. Her body language whereby she has her arms crossed and legs apart tells the audience that she is guarded, unapproachable, somewhat vulnerable and influencial to the ways of society.
Camera Shot/Movement and Editing
- Avril is centre frame to the CD cover promoting that it is all about her, it suggests her songs are likely to reflect herself and her life within the lyrics. I have concluded this also as a result of the editing. The background is blurred to emphasize her being in the spotlight and her being the centre of attention. The people in the background have been left in the frame to show she is not isolated completely however she is outcast to the other people in regards to her costume and body language. It also could signify her being outcasted in society due to her social and age group. The background looks busy with corner shops, cars and taxi's passing by and with the public walking out the frame. This could tell the audience how her everyday life, the busy lifestyle she is subjected to has got ontop of her and she is ready to move on to something new.

- The album title "Let Go" can represent many different meanings. The writing is scruffy which connotes laziness, a sense that she has given up being the good girl and is letting go, escaping from reality and has become a rebellious teenager which majority of girls can relate themselves to. Some of her songs on the album reinforces this statement such as (Losing Grip/ Too Much To Ask/ Complicated).
Bondie - Die young, stay pretty
Blondie
Old fashioned music videos such as this does not have a theory, it only has a moral behind it. It sends a message out totheir target audience whether it be correct or not.
Also in this case it Blondie's target audience is also far stretched it could go out to either gender or age group.
The setting that they are trying to convey is at the beach. Also the musical intruments are associated to that setting also, such as bongo drums. This setting also portrays to be low budget as the music video is in the same setting throughout.
Camera shots/movement
Many low angle and long shots are used within this video, it straight cuts numerous times between each memeber in the band. This shows them as a powerful and high status amoungst the audience, however within the band it conveys that they are all equally famous as they share the same amount of screen shots. Blondie of course is the main focus of this video as multiple zoom in's are used from different angles, to portray she is the dominant artist, hence the name. Also many close up's were used to show the band memebers wearing masks of old people, this links in with the idea of the song, 'die young, stay pretty.' It subconsciously sends a message to her target audience that is it bad to become old, this statement is supported when she contrasts the straight cuts used between her wearing the mask and then to her natural face.
Lighting
The key light is coming from the side of the band and from above, this is unusual to use as shadows will come accross the face highlighting only half of their faces however, an orange fill light has been added from the other side of the face again to make the facial expressions more clear from the audiences perspective. Therefore two different coloured lights are shinning on the band members from two different angles, this creates a warm mood.
Costume
All there costumes are obviously set back in the late seventies, early eighties. Pokerdot shirts and head sweat bands which were the latest fashion back in that era. Their costumes are basic and simple. Their outfits are summery which go with the setting they are trying to portray.

Alanis Morissette - CD Cover
Alanis MorissetteMise En Scene
The first thing which stands out is the virbriant and bold colours. Blue and orangey-red contrast with each other. Blue can connote cold emotions such as sadness and hurt. Orange/Red is a walm colour however is can connote both happiness and anger.
The picture is animated, it was constructed in this way to suggest that she is guarded or using a 'fake' identity to sell her album. Half her face is cut outside of the frame, we are also unable to see her costume and just her face features and the colours used on the artist are unrealistic and not life-like, this suggests that she is trying to hide something about herself.
However, in the image she faces front on looking out towards to the audience, it shows that she is confident and is making a connection to draw attention to her target audience.

The font used is century gothic. I noticed she uses no capital letters, the title appears quite simple and bland. Again this could reflect on the type of artist or the type of music she produces. Again orange has been used to draw attention to the artist's name and title of the album.
Gwen Stafani - HollaBack Girl
Gwen Stafani
This music video follows a todorov theory whereby the equilibrium at the start is when she is having fun taking photographs at the beginning with her girlfriends. The vocals start to kick in and this is when both the disruptiona nd the realisation of the disruption kicks in. The lyrics go on to tell a story of how a girl has made up a rumour about Gwen and therefore they are on they're way to sort this out. Although you are unable to see what happens within the conflict in which they are having, the lyrics portray that Gwen won the fight and therefore the new equilibrium has been reinstated.
The target audience for this music video is obviously targeted towards younger generations, preferrably those who are still in education. Evidence of this is when a scene occurs at a high school on the playing field. Older generations can also relate to this as rumours can be spread no matter what age, although it is mainly objective to teenagers. Another reason i think this is because of the costumes in which Gwen wheres throughout her videos which will be explained in detail later.
Camera shots/Movement
Establishing shot is a close up of Gwen taking a photograph, it creates an enigma for the audience as we are unsure what she is looking at. The Next shot is an over shoulder shot of her actually taking the photograph of her girl friends, again this is easy to relate to from any age or gender. Then we see a medium shot of Gwen sitting in a car with all her friends singing along to her song, this creates a happy and energetic atmoshpere for the audience as she is appears to be having fun with her friends and they are enjoying listening to her song. In a sense it sends a subconscious message to her fans saying that this could be them with their friends enjoying my song also. The same camera shot is used but while they are on their travels, in the background you can see little boys on their bikes following her car, this suggests that her music appeals to both male and female audiences and that she is a popular artist. It then straight cuts to a long shot of four girls who are dancing hip hop style which inevitably makes the audience want to dance also as the mood and atmosphere is upbeat. Her gestures and body language within this frame portrays her to have an attitude and hard exterior but playful side as well. This is a conventional stereotype of a teenager. A medium shot of her holding her mouth when the lyric involves a swearword is playful and proposes that she knows it is a bad word and it sends the message that it is wrong to say it which has likely been used for the purpose of young viewers. Again she does this when she places her finger against her mouth symbolising to be quiet as it should not be said. Another long shot of a random group of youths running accross the frame links in with the lyric, 'getting everybody fired up.' this camera shot helps the audience to understand the story line of her song more clearly. An extreme long shot of the car pulling up to a school setting again reinforces my idea that she is targeting this song to younger audiences. Many tracking shots from the front, side and behind, follows Gwen as she walks with attitude, she is also being followed by many other teenagers behind her which in reality is the usual ordeal when a fight occurs. In the background you can see the 'extras' getting excited about this fight, this conveys the hype atmosphere and facial expressions are all happy which shows that they feel confident about Gwen. A medium shot of Gwen in a jump suit unzipped revealing her bra appears as flirtacious and sexy, behind her she has many dancing cheerleaders, which in chick flicks are normally used to portray the popular pretty girls, this has been used to engage with her male audience. Again a tracking shot of her walking towards the camera with a steel brass band behind her allows the audience to see the type of environment she is in.
Long shots of the brass band playing music blends in perfectly, it suggests they are adding to the atmosphere also this is used appropriately as the sound of this song includes instruments such as horns and drums which generally is a brass bands main instruments.
A low angle shot is used on Gwen walking in front of a car which shows she is important and has power over the audience in this shot and the fact she walks infront of the car tells us as an audience everybody follows/copies her in what she does.
Close up of Gwen's face with eye contact with the camera engages the audience to her facial expression which appears to be hard-looking and up for a fight.
A high angle shot is now used showing Gwen standing up and the dancers are all kneeled down facing the floor this again gives off a sense of heirachy. Heirachy is also displayed when two dancers push Gwen around in a shopping trolly in a supermarket, a medium shot is used for this with Gwen centre frame. Ive noticed this occurs many times such as when a long shot is taken of Gwen dancing with two other girls, she is allways postioned in the middle and nearer to camera to make sure audiences know she is the important one. Close ups of horns are used when the the non-diegetic soundtrack starts to play again as it sounds like a horn, viewers can associate it then with brass bands in high school. Finally, the final shot is a medium shot of Gwen with her arms in the air looking down her nose at the camera, showing attitude and hierachy.
Costume
Gwen changes her outfit quite a few times during this music video. The first outfit appears very conventional for a pop/rock artist, she is wearing baggy trousers, a black skater hat and a short white crop top. This shows her tom boy side to Gwen which she does not normally promote about herself. A contrast in colours white and black could connote both a dark and innocent side to her as an artist in this music video especially. Her second outfit i mentioned earlier is a jumpsuit which is low zipped anabling the audience to see her bra, again this promotes a sporty yet sexy side to her. She also wears a blue and gold smart outfit as you would if you played in the Brass band however with her own unique style to it when she only wears gold pants on the lower half. She wore a cheerleading outfit at one point to show that she is part of every group and she has an influence on all the social groups. E.g Brass Band/Cheerleaders/rockers.
She also wore a red leotard which is quite revealing of her lower region, again this is to engage with her male audience.
Lighting
Majority of the lighting is natural light, mid-day time. When she dances with others in what appears to be a gym room, the key light is coming from behind and above shinning on them downwards however fill lights would have been added in front of her face to highlight her facial expressions for the camera and audience. When she walks on the playing field the natural light is yellow which tells me that the time of day is near sunset.

Mise En Scene
From first impressions, the colour blue conveys cold and negative feelings, in contrast with the white which connotes innocence and virginity. The way in which they are positioned expresses eligance and a sense of freedom. Their body language portrays openness and availability as their legs are arms are spread out inviting the audience in.
Moving onto costumes, they appear to be wearing summer dresses and swimming trunks, revealing a vast amount of skin, which also represents that they are open and confident about their appearance and style.
The key light is coming fromabove them and reflecting off the floor, this is to emphasize their movement, muscles and body tone. Fill lights would have been added infront of them to hightlight their facial expressions more clearly for the audience.
The image is shot from the front, using a long shot to enable the audience to see what is going on in the background, in this case there is nothing happening in the background therefore the focus is on the people, again it highlights their body language to the audience.

Genre Of Pop/Rock
The simple way to describe genre is the word 'category'. There are many genres involved in music and film. Audiences understand it to be used as a way of identifying where a media text is categorised according to its content.
Pop/Rock is a genre, a type or category of music we audiences identify with to determine which style of music it is.
Defining what Pop/Rock is?
Pop/Rock is easy to classify by its codes and conventions. The stereotypical codes and conventions of Pop/Rock are attitude, use of alcohol, rebellions, bold colours, loud statements etc. These are codes and conventions of Pop/Rock because they are the things that are expected to be seen by audiences. In affect they are the scenes/costumes/iconography that has been used on a number of occasions through this genre and has built itself a reputation.
Looking into further detail, for example alot of Pop/Rock artists tend to wear bold or dark colours such as pink or black, these colours connote two different things. Black connotes death, misery and negativity whereas pink conveys girly connotations, youth and perhaps immaturity as it can be associated with Barbie. These contrasting colours together have created its own style, its own category. For these artist's who encode themselves via their costumes using these colours, it indicates a deeper meaning for their character, displaying that they are rebellious and they are conveying attitude. However they aren't completely challanging female ideologies of being feminine or girly by wearing pink.
In respect of institutions, the concept of genre is imperative as it enables them to generate a media piece that can be categorised into that specific genre. In addition genre helps them decide whether it will appeal to their target audience or not by looking into and making use of the codes and conventions of that genre.
Overall genre is important for both institutions and especially audiences, as it allows them to recognise their individual interests, inevitably an audience will form an emotional attachment to that specific genre through experiences they may have, peers influence or simply because they enjoy it. Producers have to make sure they meet the expectations of a genre they imitate as the audience they wish to target towards will only search for the genre of their preference.
